The film grossed ¥13.8 billion (about US$102.5 million) worldwide, becoming the second-highest grossing Dragon Ball film to date. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for the nostalgia, characterization, non-stop fan service, well-animated fight sequences, humor and plot.
